Visit Maits Rest Rainforest Walk via Our Great Ocean Road Tours

The rugged coastline to the south of Australia is famed for its Great Ocean Road tours, where visitors can marvel at the heady mix of lush, ancient rainforests and sprawling, thunderous coast. In this part of the country, there is an abundance of hiking trails to discover that are packed full of breath-taking views and stunning wildlife.

Maits Rest is one of the more popular walks in the rainforest here, and it can be found tucked away in the heart of the Otway Ranges near the cliffs of Apollo Bay. The walk itself is a circular 800m trail that weaves through the high canopies of the rainforest and takes in some of the region’s most spectacular views.

Maits Rest forms an important part of the historic Otway Ranges, and it is a popular go-to place for visitors and locals in the area. For guests, there is a car park on-site just 15 minutes from the charm of Apollo Bay where the selection of boardwalks that crisscross through the rainforest begins.

For about 30 minutes, visitors can marvel at ancient species of plants, gaze up at soaring trees, and look out for cute critters that frolic around in the branches and on the forest floor. As you go, you’ll notice that there are plenty of beech trees flanking the trails, many of which date back hundreds of years. And keep an ear out, too, as there are more than 43 species of bird that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, each of which has its own individual call.

As for wildlife, there’s a lot to look out for; keep your eyes peeled for swamp wallabies, koalas, grey kangaroos, and ring-tailed possums amongst many other native creatures that call the rainforest home, and get your camera ready for when you emerge at spectacular lookout points along the way.

The Great Ocean Road and, more specifically, the Otway Ranges boast an incredible selection of scenery, from the wild beaches of the coastline, to dense and fairytale-like forests. The trail at Maits Rest gives you the chance to explore the rainforest scenery without having to venture too far off the beaten track.

It’s worth noting that, because it’s a popular part of the country, the route can get fairly busy, particularly in high season. That being said, it’s well worth a visit if you want to delve into the historic charm of one of the country’s oldest rainforests.
