Simpson Desert 16 Day Tour
The Simpson Desert covers an area of 150,000 square kilometres across South West Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Many explorers set out to discover the secrets of this vast and inhospitable area as they searched for pastoral land: some with tragic results. You will see beautiful scenery, cool waterholes, desert wildlife, friendly outback towns and the ruins of failed dreams.
Camels were used extensively throughout the outback and there are many running wild through the desert. After rain, this parched area comes alive and spectacular displays of wildflowers transform the desert into carpets of colour.
Cross the Simpson Desert from WEST to EAST from Dalhousie to the Birdsville Track. Birdsville was built where several stock routes converged. Enjoy the Birdsville Races, an annual event which raises much needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, before heading WEST across the Simpson and tackling BIG RED.
You will cross MADIGAN'S path. A Northerly direction through the Simpson Desert will take you to the Hay River area and TRADITIONAL OWNERS' LAND. Negotiate PRIVATE STATION TRACKS.
Return to Alice Springs via the Plenty Highway and Gem Tree.
