Canning Stock Route 23 Day Tour - 2012
The Canning Stock Route is the longest and loneliest stock route in the world and has to be one of the greatest 4WD adventures.The stock Route was established i 1906-10 by Alfred Canning and his men,and last used as a cattle drive in 1958.
A ban had been placed on the movement of Kimberley cattle infected by a tick which had arrived on cattle from Java.The tick caused red water fever which eventuallyled to deat.The Government agreed to a route through the Tanami,Great Sandy and Little Deserts to southern markets as it was thought the dry desert conditions would kill the tick.
15 days are spent on the Stock Route negotiting some 1027 sand dunes and other challenging four wheel driving.The desert colours are spectacular.Red sandcontrasts with golden spinifex,olive green desert oaktrees,purple hilss and beautiful blue sky.
Seasonal wild flowers may transform the landscape and a variety of birds,including the rare princess parrot,migratory birds and thousands of zebra finches andbudgerigars gather around the well,adding to the richflora and fauna of the desert.
