Canning Stock Route Adventure,

The Canning Stock Route is the longest and loneliest stock route in the world and has to be one of the greatest 4WD adventures. The Stock Route was established in 1906-10 by Alfred Canning and his men, and last used as a cattle drive in 1958.

A ban had been placed on the movement of Kimberley cattle infected by a tick which had arrived on cattle from Java. The tick caused red water fever which eventually led to death. The Government agreed to a route through the Tanami, Great Sandy and Little Sandy Deserts to southern markets as it was thought the dry desert conditions would kill the tick.

15 days are spent on the Stock Route negotiating some 1027 sand dunes and other challenging four wheel driving. The desert colours are spectacular. Red sand contrasts with golden spinifex, olive green desert oak trees, purple hills and beautiful blue sky.

Seasonal wildflowers may transform the landscape and a variety of birds, including the rare princess parrot, migratory birds and thousands of zebra finches and budgerigars gather around the wells, adding to the rich flora and fauna of the desert.

You can travel with confidence with an experienced guide with mechanical ability who knows this beautiful, but harsh and unforgiving desert well
